Misty Mountain offers a variety of environments from natural grasslands to indigenous forests to man-made pine plantations. Gradients are steep and rocky in places. Due to its position on the watershed, three rivers rise on the property the Nels, the Houtbosloop and the Sabie. The water at Misty Mountain is extremely clean and extremely suitable for drinking. The Nels River rises about 300 metres from the lodge and it is this water that is available at the lodge.

The climate at Misty Mountain is moderate. Summer days are warm with daytime temperatures averaging around 25 Celsius. Winter days are mild and dry with temperatures around 18 Celsius. Throughout the year, the temperature drops in the evenings and winter nights can be cold and crisp. Because Misty Mountain sits in the mist belt, a higher than average annual rainfall of about 1500 mm is experienced and this rainfall occurs mainly in the summer months.

Misty Mountain is situated at an altitude of 1700 metres above sea level and is in a malaria free area.

Pets are not allowed at Misty Mountain.

Besides your regular gear, here is a list of suggested items that you should bring to Misty Mountain:

  • a good, comfortable pair of walking shoes
  • a warm jacket/jersey for the evenings (all year round)
  • a waterproof jacket in the summer months
  • a pair of binoculars
