Long Tom Toboggan

Enjoy the ride of your life and ‘excite your soul’ on Misty Mountain’s Long Tom Toboggan. Feel the wind in your hair and the thrill in your belly when you wind and whoosh around Mpumalanga’s Long Tom Pass mountains on the Long Tom Toboggan, the longest toboggan run in Africa with an impressive 1.7 km track. Simply hop on board your Long Tom Toboggan cart and prepare to take a deep breath when you reach a speed of 45 kilometres an hour during your three-minute ride, as you twist and turn through wild flowers, open grassland and pine forests.

Rides are subject to strict safety rules, terms and conditions, including a weight limit of 120 kilograms. This activity is suitable for people of all ages. However, children need to be a minimum of 7/8 years old to ride alone and need to be strong enough to manage the brake lever on the toboggan cart. The Long Tom Toboggan is designed and built on the principles of the tried and tested European model known as an “alpine coaster” or “sommerrodelbahn”.

Long Tom Scootours

If you can ride a bicycle, you can ride a scooter! This is a unique experience of sensational downhill runs in the mountains of the Long Tom Pass. Starting at an altitude of 1765 metres above sea level on a Monster Scooter, single track through grasslands, patches of indigenous forest and vast pine plantations. The scooters are non-motorized, making this an eco-friendly adventure.

Scootours is not an extreme activity but a unique and family friendly way to experience nature and the surroundings of the destination. All trips are guided by professional guides. All scooters can handle one adult with a child passenger under 10 years of age. Children over 10 years can ride alone, provided they are strong enough to manage the scooter.

Guided Quad Biking

This popular activity takes guests on a four-wheel journey around Misty Mountain, using forestry roads, and secluded mountain paths, criss-crossing pine plantations, open veld and grasslands. Experienced guides take charge of these one-hour excursions and treat riders to unique routes, scenery and undisturbed places.

Safety is paramount on these trips and riders are requested to follow the guide’s instructions at all times, particularly during the pre-ride training session. This activity is suitable for adults only. No riders under 16 years of age are allowed, but special arrangements can be made for passengers under the age of 16 and less than 50 kgs in weight.

Walking Trails & Birding

Misty Mountain boasts kilometres of walking trails from slow hill climbs to steep descents into shady valleys to secret searches for hidden waterfalls and river sources. Alternatively, take the foot path to the last site of Long Tom Cannon - a short 2,5 km walk from Misty Mountain. If it is merely a comfortable stroll you are looking for, our ample gardens and surrounds will provide the necessary space for that.

Bring a good pair of walking/hiking shoes along and, of course, your binoculars. Misty Mountain is home to many indigenous and migratory birds. Expect to see plentiful bird life on your foot travels.

Mountain Biking

The web of forestry roads in and around Misty Mountain provide mountain bikers with an ideal playground. Varied indigenous and pine forests, open grasslands and wide-ranging altitudes cater for the novice to the most experienced riders. Bring your own bikes along and get pedalling.
